July Volunteer Highlight: La Talya Parrish

On top of being a Genius parent to Hesten Parrish (OAK7), La Talya Parrish has dedicated over 6 years of service to supporting The Hidden Genius Project as a volunteer. From Interview Days to our End of Summer Celebrations, LaTalya has continuously shown up to serve our community, committed to supporting and uplifting future generations of Geniuses to come.

How did you first find out about The Hidden Genius Project?
Eight years ago, my son Hesten participated in a year-long coding program at the David E. Glover Emerging Technology Center, which shared its space with The Hidden Genius Project during the summer months.  He became intrigued, and two years later, he was accepted into The Hidden Genius Project’s Intensive Immersion Program.

What are some recent events you volunteered at with The Hidden Genius Project?
My support for The Hidden Genius Project is year-round. Whenever called upon, I’m proud to volunteer and contribute in any way to its commitment to our male youth.  Most recently, I had the privilege of again participating in Oakland Interview Day for prospective Geniuses, which is truly an inspiring experience. I’ve also enjoyed supporting the annual Brothers Code event and the vibrant Bay Area End of Summer Celebration. Last year, I was honored to share my journey as a parent of an alumnus, and I’m excited for the next opportunity to serve in this incredible community.

What motivates you to stay connected and committed to supporting Geniuses through your work here?
What motivates me to stay connected and committed to supporting the Geniuses is seeing their promise, their dedication, and the brotherhood they build with one another.  It is truly inspiring and reminds me why the work of The Hidden Genius Project matters.

I’m also continually motivated by the intelligence and dedication of the staff. It’s clear they genuinely enjoy supporting and uplifting our young men, who come from all corners of our community.

Can you share a specific moment or story during your volunteer experience that was particularly meaningful to you?
Some of my most heartfelt experiences with The Hidden Genius Project happen each year at the End of Summer Celebration, where I volunteer to check in guests who registered for the event. Listening to the Geniuses excitedly explain their coding projects they’ve conceptualized, completed, and proudly share always reminds me of the gravity of what they’re learning, and just how bright their futures are.

One Genius even used his honed coding skills to remotely unlock electric locks. What a Genius!

Why do you think it is important to volunteer and stay connected to your community?
Volunteering is one of the most meaningful ways to give back. It allows a person to make a real impact in their community. And when I volunteer, I feel that I’m not just helping someone else. I know that in some small way, I’m a part of the village helping to raise our children to realize their own brilliance.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about volunteering in a mentorship or leadership capacity at The Hidden Genius Project?
My advice to anyone thinking about volunteering in a mentorship or leadership role is to go in with an open heart, patience, and a real desire to help others. It may take time to see the impact, but the difference you make is so worth it to the Genius and his community.
