Only 19%.
That’s the percentage of Black men currently enrolled at Howard University—one of the nation’s crown jewels among Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It was founded to uplift, nurture, and celebrate Black excellence, yet now, Black men represent one in five students—a clear signal that we can do more to create pathways to access and opportunity.
This isn’t just a number—it’s a signal of where we must focus our energy. It confirms what we’ve long understood: when we invest in Black boys, they rise. The shifts in college enrollment remind us that now is the time to expand opportunity, remove barriers, and ensure every young man has a clear, supported path to pursue his brilliance.
Since the start of the last decade, male enrollment across various institutions has trended downward. However, in the wake of COVID-19, the situation worsened significantly. In spring 2021 alone, enrollment for Black men dropped by 14.3%. At community colleges—often the most viable pathway for low-income and first-generation students—the decline was an alarming 21.5%.
This is not a moment to pause and reflect; it’s a call to action. The data captures only part of the story. Behind every number is a young man with a story—someone who shows up with talent, drive, and a deep commitment to his future. These are leaders in the making who, even while moving through systems that weren’t built with them in mind, keep showing us what’s possible when determination meets vision. They’re not waiting to be saved—they’re already building, creating, and leading.
At The Hidden Genius Project we see the opportunity. Every day, we work with young Black men who are not only defying the odds but also redefining them. We don’t believe in charity; we believe in investment. Because we know the return on that investment: Black men with college degrees don’t just earn more—they build more, they aspire for more, and they achieve more. They help create stability among families, launch businesses, mentor others, and create pathways for those who follow. Our model reflects a vital truth: Black boys are brilliant. They are leaders. When given the resources, space, and support to thrive, they do.
Our work is grounded in the philosophy of Ubuntu—“I am because we are.” This isn’t just a philosophy; it’s our foundation. And our approach is practical, holistic, and proven to be impactful.
- 95% of our Geniuses graduate from high school
- Over 250 have enrolled in post-secondary education.
- More than 40% are pursuing degrees in Computer Science.
- 14% are entering Business-related fields
However, this isn’t just about academic achievement; it’s about tapping into the reservoir of creativity. It’s about equipping our young people with the tools to dream and transform their lives- defining success and achieving it on their own terms.
Each Genius exemplifies what happens when systemic neglect is replaced with holistic support. When we stop expecting Black boys to “overcome” their circumstances and instead ask systems to support them as they are. We equip them with the technical skills needed to thrive in a world driven by innovation. We nurture their creativity and leadership abilities. We provide them with access, not just to education but to a vision for their futures. Yet, our work is just beginning.
To scale our impact, we need to scale our investment. The world we envision—one free from artificial barriers, where opportunity is shared, not hoarded—requires intention, policy, programming, and community involvement. Through targeted universalism, we believe we can build a future that benefits everyone by centering the needs of those who have been most excluded. When we create systems that work for the most marginalized, we inherently improve them for all—a rising tide lifts all boats. This is our mission—and our invitation. If we want a nation where every child can thrive, where talent isn’t hindered by zip code or skin color, we must invest in Black boys. Not tomorrow, not when it’s convenient, but now.
Support The Hidden Genius Project. Support the young men who are daring to dream beyond the limits imposed by society. Because when they rise, they lift us all forward. Let’s rise with them. Together.
