How have you been? (With life? With Family? With school? Work?)
I’ve been good. I’ve been staying really active with my photography business on the side while attending high school. In terms of college applications and my senior year, I’ve kept my grades up and got accepted into 23 colleges so far. I’ve also earned over $350k in scholarships. Through it all, I’ve been staying focused and making sure my family is taken care of.
How did you first learn about The Hidden Genius Project?
I first learned about The Hidden Genius Project when
they came to my school and gave a presentation. They talked about their program, what they offer, and how they help young Black males get into tech and leadership. It really caught my attention, and I knew I wanted to be a part of that program.
What was your experience in the program like? Any reflections?
My experience in the program was great. I enjoyed learning how to make a website because I wanted to use it for my business and build real skills that I can use in the future. What I enjoyed most was the support; even though I know I could’ve pushed myself even further, The Hidden Genius Project always accepted who I was.
During my time in The Hidden Genius Project, I lost someone real close to me, and the pain made me pull away from everyone. I felt overwhelmed and unmotivated to move forward with a lot of things I had going on in my life. But The Hidden Genius Project staff was there and supported me through all my hardships. Because of them, I found strength again and started to heal as a young Black leader.
Describe the final project you created during your time in the Immersion Program.
My website is based around my photography and shares my photography journey, and shows my best shots. On the website, I talk about how I got into photography as a way to express myself and capture the world from my perspective. Each photo is paired with a short story showing how photography became more than a hobby.
How is The Hidden Genius Project different from other mentorship or training experiences that you have been involved in?
The Hidden Genius Project is different from other mentorship experiences I’ve been involved in because it goes beyond just advice. It builds leadership and real-world skills unlike other programs; it focuses on young Black males, creating a space where I feel seen, supported, and challenged to grow. Through tech training, personal development, and deep mentorship, it has pushed me to become the best version of myself.
What specific skills learned in The Hidden Genius Project have been most beneficial for you?
I used to be afraid of speaking in front of people due to a lack of confidence. Now that I have gained confidence, I am able to present my ideas clearly and professionally. I have also gained leadership skills. I used to tend to be a follower or someone who just wanted to fit in. But The Hidden Genius Project changed that by pushing me to step up, take initiative, and support my peers. All of this helped me grow into someone others can rely on.
The most important thing I gained, however, was self-confidence. Before joining, I often doubted my voice and what I was capable of, but through the support and challenges in the program, I learned to believe in myself. That confidence has changed how I approach everything from schools to my goals for the future. I really noticed this change when I was able to complete assignments and feel confident that I did well on them. I’m overall filled with more confidence in my skills, intelligence, and abilities.
How do you think your path might have been different if you hadn’t participated in The Hidden Genius Project?
If I hadn’t participated in The Hidden Genius Project, I think my outlook on life and path would have been very different. I didn’t fully realize the value of my voice or ideas. I might not have discovered my passion for tech and photography. Also, I gained confidence to turn those interests into real opportunities. Without the support, I probably would’ve stayed in my shell and missed out on growing into the leader I’m becoming. Now, as a senior in high school, I’m more confident, focused, and ready to lead with purpose. I’ve grown into someone who sees challenges as chances to level up, not back down.
In what ways have you remained involved with The Hidden Genius Project since completing the 15-month Intensive Immersion program?
Since completing the 15-month Intensive Immersion Program, I’ve stayed involved by staying connected with the Alumni network. The staff of The Hidden Genius Project has stayed connected by regularly checking in and offering mentorship. They’re always just a call or text away whenever I need support or advice. Even after graduating, they continue to invest in my growth like I’m still in the program. I also share what I’ve learned with my community and represent the program whenever I can. It’s important to me to give back to the same space that helped shape who I am today.
If you could talk to yourself just before you applied, what is one thing you would say?
Be honest about who you are and where you come from because your story matters. Don’t be afraid to show your passion, as many people look up to you. Trust yourself and let people see who you really are.
What words of encouragement do you have for future Geniuses?
Believe in yourself, even when you feel like you haven’t experienced a lot in the world. Every challenge you face is shaping the leader you’ll become. Keep showing up, stay curious, and know that you belong in every room you step into.
Since 2012, nearly 11,400 students have revealed their genius through our Immersion, Catalyst, and Community Partner Programs, and so many more are waiting to shine.
